Acequieros,

We often say our youth are the future. Tonight in Tierra Amarilla, Escalante High School, we have an opportunity to ensure that future includes a strong public education system for every child in our state.

7 years ago the NM District Court ruled that the NM Public Education Department  was failing our communities. Specifically, Native American, Hispanic and students with disabilities. Since then, we have been waiting for NMPED to act. In April of this year the District Court said we CANNOT wait any longer. The judge ordered NMPED to create a plan by October 1, 2025. This included several community meetings meant to gather OUR recommendations. Many of you attended the community meetings and participated by submitting your suggestions to be included in the plan. It was an amazing show of force!

The draft Martinez/Yazzie Action Plan is now available for public review. Community members are encouraged to read the plan in full and share feedback via the online survey during the public comment period, which is open through Oct. 17.

Community Meeting
Tonight!

Creating the plan though, is not enough. We must ensure that NMPED has included the comments we submitted and  the perspectives of acequieros and land based people in their plan. NMAA has partnered with Transform Education New Mexico to facilitate community meetings in all corners of the state to review this plan. We will be in Tierra Amarilla at Escalante High School this evening October 9, 2025. 153 NM-531, Los Ojos, NM 87551.
